I really like to see plants growing on top of rocks.
Take these bluebells for example…
They are growing out of the side of a huge dolomite boulder on the Lake Huron Lakeshore.
The boulder itself was probably 70 feet tall.
It took about 5 minutes to walk all the way around it.
Under all that moss, a huge rock.
And yes, bluebells growing upside down, from the side of it.
Or this one.
(a little blurry, but you get the idea).
How is that even possible?
The truth is, when roots expand, they exert some pressure.
That’s called root wedging.
And it breaks down the rock.
Of course, the plant material itself decomposes and develops the soil as well.
It always surprises me to see it.
Whole trees.
Small ones…
Medium ones…
And yes, very large trees.
Growing right over sheer rock.
Nature reminds us that there is possibility.
Even when the conditions are harsh.
Or seem impossible.
Especially when.
